Stage-specificembryonicantigen-1(SSEA-1),alsoknownasCD15,isanantigenicepitopedefinedasaLewisXcarbohydratestructure.Itisexpressedonmurineembryonalcarcinoma(EC)cells,murineembryonicstem(ES)cells,andmurineandhumangermcells.SSEA-1iswidelyusedasapositivesurfaceMarkerformouseundifferentiatedstemcellsandanegativesurfacemarkerforhumanundifferentiatedstemcells.Expressionisdown-regulatedfollowingdifferentiationofmurineECandEScells,whilethedifferentiationofhumanECandEScellsisaccompaniedbyanincreaseinSSEA-1expression.SSEA-1isassociatedwithcelladhesion,migration,anddifferentiation.Foruseonlivecells,thisantibodyhasbeenspecificallyformulatedwithlowendotoxinandnosodiumazide.EScellmorphology,proliferation,andexpressionofpluripotencymarkersdoesnotchangeafterstainingwiththisantibody.
